Dragon boat racing was first introduced to Singapore in 1978 when Hong Kong invited the island nation to participate in the Hong Kong Races. Singapore launched its first dragon boat competition that same year restricting entry to local participants but still attracting 25 teams. From then on the sound of the beating drums and the swish of oars has become louder and drawn more spectacular with each passing year. These days, the river comes alive with cheers from the riverbanks as more than 2,000 participants from 100 teams from around the world compete in this energetic sport.

SHUKI TAISAI GRAND AUTUMN FESTIVAL

Travel back in time and allow yourself to be surrounded by 1,000 samurai during the two-day Shuki Taisai Grand Autumn Festival. Yabusame, traditional Japanese horseback archery, and Hyakumono-Zoroe Sennin Gyoretsu – the Parade of 1,000 Samurai Warriors – are the highlights. The procession, led by men carrying a mikoshi, a portable shrine, departs from the Futarasan-jinja Shrine of Sannai, Nikko, and heads for the Otabisho, its temporary resting place during the festival. The procession is the reproduction of the funeral ceremony of the first Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542 – 1616) who had asked to be buried in Nikko.
